dream – noun
- 1. a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind during sleep.
A dream or vision is almost always something with expectation attached to it: it puts our hopes somewhere for the future.
Dreams are a way that God speaks to us! We sleep 1/3 of our day. 8 hours (is the average sleep time frame) is a long time and while we are resting God can speak to us. Isn’t that cool? No time is wasted in Gods kingdom. Even sleeping can be productive!
Joseph had a dream. That dream had such purpose attached to his future. It was so vivid and detailed with much meaning behind it. He knew it was no ordinary dream otherwise, he wouldn’t have woken up talking about it.
These dreams are rare but they are usually that. Vivid details and colors, usually have clear people in it that you can recognize and it is important to remember how you felt when you woke up from it: peace? Excitement? Joy? That is usually a God dream. I write those down right away before I forget.
Visions are things that happen in the waking hours but are usually interchangeable with dreams. Dr Martin Luther King Jr wasn’t clear if his dream was an actual at night sleeping dream or more of a vision that felt like a dream. I take it as a vision he had.
A God given vision for me has usually been similar to the dreams. They are vivid, clear and from my subconscious. Usually during a time of prayer or worship when I’m connecting with the Lord and something that is subconscious, meaning I’m not even thinking about it and then the vision just starts to play out for me.
A God vision usually answers something Ive been praying for and it always gives me peace. If I’m not sure I can ask God and I always write those down as well. It’s often confirmed by a verse or another word I had from something else.
God is faithful to speak to us in our way. It will always line up with scripture and there is usually a reason He gives them to us instead of just letting life play out. Why dreams?
Dreams either confirm something for you, answer a question, are a warning to be prayed into or to be careful of and/or show you what God wants to do through you for the future.
God dreams/visions always serve a purpose. It’s always wise to bring it to Him in prayer and write it down! I have found that when I don’t take it seriously and pray into it, the thing I was ignoring happened and usually should have happened more graceful. So I’ve grown into what these dreams/visions look like and I pay attention to how I feel about them. There is always peace and no dread. If it is a warning, I still have peace if it’s from God because He is with me.
Dreams are another way God speaks to us. I often ask God for dreams before going to bed so that I can wake up with fresh revelation. I don’t always get them but I at least feel like I’m submitting my conscience to Him before sleeping. I always rebuke the enemy before bed too!
Try asking God for a dream before bed, rebuke the enemy and keep a journal and pen next to your bed. Happy sleeps!
“‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.”
Acts of the Apostles 2:17 NLT
